Science in Class 5

In science this term, Class 5 are looking at materials and their properties. As a class, we have learnt so much new vocabulary and are now starting to put it in to practise by doing some fun experiments!

Our first experiment focused on soluble and insoluble materials. We started by making some predictions as a whole class as to which materials would be soluble and which ones insoluble. Then we split in to groups and tried to separate different objects from each other using a range of methods including filtering, evaporation and sieving.

The children thoroughly enjoyed working together to see if their predictions were correct. The group to separate all the items first were very proud of themselves!

We have now moved on to reversible and irreversible changes. We tested which liquids cause metal to rust by creating an observational study, we placed metal nails in to a variety of liquids (coke, water, vinegar, lemon juice and cooking oil) and then observed the changes each day - the final results were quite a shock to us! We will continue to look at reversible and irreversible changes this half term to secure our knowledge on the scientific reasoning behind the results!

Science challenge:

Can you explain what these words mean to someone who doesn't know?

  1. Soluble
  2. Insoluble
  3. Permeable
  4. Magnetic
  5. Translucent
  6. Transparent
  7. Flexible
  8. Insulating
  9. Flammable
  10. Irreversible

Stay tuned for more fun experiments!
