Year 6 experience life as an evacuee!

Image of Year 6 experience life as an evacuee!

As part of our World War 2 topic, we had a wonderful and interesting visit to Thwaite Mills yesterday. As you can see we entered the spirit by dessing like evacuees and when we arrived were issued with our own I.D. cards and Gas Mask boxes!

We split into groups and took part in 3 workshops discovering what it was like during an air raid (we discovered the siren's very loud), why Thwaite Mills' production of putty was so important, and measured out an adult's rations for the week. We were surprised to see how little food people were allowed, and that children would get the equivalent of 6 boiled sweets every two weeks!

Thank you to Adrian, George and Jodie for being such excellent and informative guides - you can see from the pictures it was a great experience!
