No Pens Day

Yesterday was No Pens Day, and we loved it!

We started the day off learning some BSL: we learnt how to sign the alphabet, our names and some simple greetings like 'hello' and 'how're' you. The children really enjoyed the opportunity to learn a new method of communication and many of them are still using their signs today!

We watched 'The Lighthouse' in guided reading and used our verbally discussed different inferences we could make. The children also loved doing this, so we are going to do some more visual and audio inference by looking at some of the Christmas adverts currently on TV.

We had lots of fun with calculators, learning some cool tricks and spelling out different words.

In the afternoon, the children explored the force of friction using 3 different surfaces to test the different effects they had on the speed and distance a car could travel. We finished the day with PSHE where we watched some 'old fashioned' adverts as the children described them (they were early 00s!!) and discussed how the media plays a role in reinforcing stereotypes. The children are becoming real warriors at spotting stereotypes and are really beginning to question and challenge different stereotypes that they are observing around them, which is amazing!
