Modern Day Slavery

Today we had a visitor called Ele from the Just Enough Group, who delivered a very inspiring workshop about Modern Day Slavery.

We learnt the story of how William Wilberforce started the process of banning slavery in the early 1800s but was ignored by the government. After collecting signatures and creating a petition, he returned to government, who then banned the Slave Trade in 1807. Despite this, people all over the world were and still are subjected to slavery every day.

As of 2007, slavery is illegal in every single country; however, there are still an estimated 40-45 million slaves around the world making it a £150 billion a year industry and the second most widespread crime in the world (after the drug industry).

We learnt the story of a fictional family (Bob, Betty and Beyonce) through the use of drama and learnt the signs of modern day slavery that we can look out for.

Just Enough Group taught us this acronym to help us remember:

Suspicious person guarding them

Local language is a struggle

Any person

Valid travel documents missing

Emotional

We learnt that whilst these things individually do not mean the person is subject to slavery, together, they could be a cause for concern.

The workshop was very inspiring and we learnt lots of shocking facts, but most importantly, learnt how we can help or make a difference by calling the BUZZLINE phone line if we have any worries (because modern day slavery is happening in the UK - including Leeds!)

Thank you to Ele and Just Enough group for opening our eyes to this very real issue!
