No Pen Day

Class 5 had an unbelievable No Pens Day! They put their active listening and speaking skills to great use so that we could all enjoy the day fully. As a whole, our favourite activity was voting with our feet.

The children were given the statement: 'Anyone can be a positive role model.'

Without speaking at all, children chose to stand at strongly disagree, disagree, agree or strongly agree and at first we had a fairly even split of children in each corner. Children discussed their views with other like minded children and then we shared with the whole class. Once we had heard from every corner, children were given the opportunity to change their minds and I was super proud of how many children were brave enough to make the move!! All children were speaking in full sentences and using phrases such as 'Referring to what ...... said earlier' and 'I have changed my mind from agree to disagree because...'. Take a look at our final stances below.

Our strongly disagree children believed that everyone could be a role model but this didn't necessarily mean that everyone could be a positive role model.

Our disagree children believed that almost everyone could be a positive role model but that there are a few exceptions. They even gave us some examples of who they believed could never be considered a positive role model (Adolf Hitler).

These children all agreed that everyone could be a positive role model but were unsure about whether there may be some exceptions to the statement.

Our strongly agree children believed that no matter what someone had done in their past, they had the chance to change their lives around and that this in itself was inspirational meaning that they could be considered positive role models.

Great discussion Year 5, well done!
