National Railway Museum Visit

This half term our topic has been "Transport", because the children had been showing a keen interest in planes, trains and other modes of transport.  A trip to the Railway Museum therefore seemed like a perfect way to extend our topic.

This week Class R had an absolutely wonderful trip to the NRM in York.  The children saw lots of trains, spotting the differences between the old engines and the newer ones.  They learnt about how trains work - in fact some of the children were teaching the teachers about pistons and steam engines!  We went on the Bullet train, saw a Eurostar, looked at Stephenson's Rocket and walked underneath a train engine.  The children were amazed by the Royal trains - why would anyone have a bath on a train, they asked!  We were also lucky enough to see Tim Peake's space capsule. Although the children were disappointed not to see Tim himself, they all happily tried on a real spacesuit.

We were also treated to a Punch and Judy show inside a freight wagon - the children enjoyed their "trip to the seaside" and enthusiastically warned Mr Punch about the crocodile!  As well as spotting trains, the children found lots of number '7's and spotted some of our new digraphs on the signs.  Learning opportunities we had not even anticipated!

The class walked miles, backwards and forwards through the museum but didn't complain.  They really had a wonderful time and we were very proud of them all.

Since we have returned to school, the children have been busy building trains, making a  puppet theatre, writing a play script,  painting flags and so much more, all inspired by their day at the Museum.  A successful trip indeed!

We hope you enjoy the photos.
