Affect vs. Effect

Image of Affect vs. Effect

Effect and affect are a pair of really tricky homophones that we have been trying to learn in Class 5 this week.

We came up with the class rule of:

  1. Effect is a noun, it can be replaced by consequence and the sentence will still make sense.
  2. Affect is a verb, it can be replaced by influence and the sentence will still make sense.

Our next step was to come up with ways to remember which affect/effect could be replaced by consequence and which affect/effect could be replaced by influence. We tried to do this by coming up with sayings that linked E(effect) to C(consequence) and A(affect) to I(influence).

Here's some of our attempts:

Emmerdale can be replaced by Coronation Street.

Emojis are cool.

Elephants cause big consequences.

Animals can influence people.

Angels live indoors.

Apples are insane.
