How are Muslim babies welcomed into the world?

Today, we welcomed two of our lovely Class 2 parents into school to help us with our RE topic.

The children listened really carefully to the information about the Adhan, a special prayer which is whispered into the ear of the baby when he or she is born. We even got to try some delicious sweet treats after we found out that Muslim babies often have a little bit of honey or sweet date put on to their tongue when they are born! Yum!

We learnt that shortly after a Muslim baby is born, their hair is shaved and money is donated to charity. The children then decided to give a traditional name to our doll. They chose the name Eesa, which translates to 'Jesus' in English.

Our fabulous guests translated each child's name in to Arabic and explained that when reading Arabic, we read from right to left.

We learnt so much today and are very grateful to our guests for coming to share their experiences with us!
