Y5/6 Girls Leeds Tag Rugby Finals at Crawshaw Academy (9/7/19) – Winners & Runners Up!
9 July 2019
This year we were able to take every girl in Y5 & 6 to the Leeds Finals Competition. The competition itself had been postponed from earlier in the season because of the weather, merging the Regionals with the Finals to form one big end of year competition. We had three teams entering, and with the best teams in the city in attendance, each team was successful in their own right. The Shadwell C-team were able to qualify out of their group and make it all the way to the quarter finals, showing the willingness to take responsibility and push themselves to do their very best! Our B-team also qualified from their difficult group by winning all of their games, their quarter-final, and their semi-final. They showed great resilience and maturity in challenging situations. In the final they met the Shadwell A-team, who had also won all their games so far, making the final an all Shadwell affair. With both first and second places already sealed, the girls made the final an enjoyably competitive match. It was clear both teams wanted to win and call themselves the best in Leeds and in the end, it was Shadwell A-team who narrowly came on top, winning the Leeds Finals for the 5th YEAR IN A ROW! Also not losing a competitive game in those five years, is an incredible achievement! To have all our teams do so well in the competition was just a brilliant way for a truly tremendous group of children to end their primary school experience; we’ve always been, and will continue to be, so proud of our children! Well done girls!
Y5/6 Boys Football Leeds Final at St Theresa’s (8/7/19) – Won 3-1!
8 July 2019
What a way for the football team to end their season, by competing in the Leeds Final! Just to get to this stage was a great achievement; it’s been a long road for the boys and they’ve overcome a lot of setbacks and tricky situations to be here. They were playing Holy Family, a great school for sport and the team that had previously beaten Shadwell in the Cup Final earlier in the season. The boys, understandable with the occasion, got off to a shaky start, needing to settle into the game. We struggled to get out of our own half for the first part of the game as Holy Family applied pressure and took a few corners. Still towards half time was when Shadwell were able to mount some pressure of their own, and even took the lead! Unfortunately, Holy Family were able to equalise straight away, meaning the joy was short lived, and when a Shadwell penalty hit the bar just before the break, the team went in with mixed feelings at half time. On the one hand they had withstood heavy pressure and handled it well. On the other they could argue they might be 2-0 up on another day. Still, the scores were level, and the focus had to be on the second half as they entered the next 20 minutes of football. Defensively, we were doing really well, restricting the opposition to mainly long range shots and using our pace and passing to create attacks of our own; and when Gabriel finished an attack down the left to make it 2-1, it was on the opposition to come and apply even more pressure, allowing us to use that space even better. Dan B added a third soon after and the boys managed the situation brilliantly to secure the result! The game finished 3-1 and meant for the first time in school history, Shadwell had the best boys football team in Leeds! A tremendous achievement which the boys had strived for, and definitely didn’t come easily! What a great end to the season!
Y5 Leeds Dodgeball Finals at Leeds Beckett (4/7/19) – Winners!
4 July 2019
Having qualified by winning their previous round, the Y5 Dodgeball team competed at the Leeds Finals alongside the other best teams in the City. In an action-packed competition with lots of intense moments, the boys kept their cool, bringing back games from losing positions and making key plays when it counted! The results saw us win our group and qualify for the final! In the final it was a best of three format. We were able to win the first game, but just lost the second right at the end to take it to a deciding final three-minute match. A close game to start with, the team made some brilliant catches to swing the momentum and then capitalised with some great counter shots to win the final, and the tournament overall! Making them the best team in the whole of Leeds! Well done boys, you really earned it!
Y5/6 Tag Rugby West Yorkshire Finals (1/7/19) – Runners Up!
1 July 2019
Having qualified from the Leeds Finals in May, the team were now one of four to represent the whole city at the West Yorkshire Finals against the best teams from Bradford, Wakefield, Kirklees and Calderdale! In what was quite possibly the best Tag Rugby team performance ever, the children won their group matches 4-1, 4-1, 9-0 and 5-1 to set up a quarter final match. The team were playing brilliantly and won the quarter final 6-3 and the semi-final 5-1 to set up a final match. Even though the children lost the final 4-3, their play throughout was absolutely tremendous; the best teams in the whole County were in attendance and to finish 2nd, out of around 750 teams which had took part throughout the year was amazing, and the best Shadwell had ever done! Credit goes to this fantastic team and what they’ve achieved, how they’ve achieved it, and the way they’ve worked together!
Y6 Girls Leeds Cricket Finals (27/6/19) – Winners & 3rd Place
27 June 2019
For the first time, we entered the Leeds Girls Cricket Tournament this year, and were able to take all the girls in Y6, forming two teams. Despite having limited experience playing competitively, the girls did brilliantly, winning their games and having great fun doing so. Both teams got the results they were hoping for, eventually finishing first and third overall and the winners qualified for the Yorkshire Finals as a result! It was a great day out full of enjoyable moments!
Y6 Boys Dodgeball Tournament at John Smeaton (27/6/19) – Winners!
27 June 2019
With the Y6 girls having won their tournament earlier in the year, it was the boys’ turn to compete this time. They were able to grow into the tournament as it went on, progressing through the games and making the most of their chances. The team’s play was so good in fact that it meant they eventually won the whole tournament, just like the girls did previously! It was a great evening with lots of action-packed moments and another brilliant result for the boys!
Y5/6 Netball League Finals at Cookridge (17/6/19)
17 June 2019
Having won the East Leeds League for the first time, Shadwell therefore qualified for the League Finals Day; a competition where all the league winners play off against each other. In a very difficult tournament, which included teams that were going onto compete in the West Yorkshire Finals, the team fought valiantly, narrowly losing. Despite the result the team was rightly pleased with what they had done to get to this stage and can look back on the season with pride!
Y5/6 Netball Regional Finals at Corpus Christi (6/6/19) – Runners Up
6 June 2019
After qualifying from their competition to get here, the Netball team competed at the Regional Finals this week, with only the winners having the opportunity to go through to the City Finals. The team played brilliantly all the way through the group stages and were also able to win their semi-final. Despite leading in the final, they were ultimately unable to overcome Deighton Gates, who won 2-1 in the end; meaning Shadwell unfortunately didn’t qualify for the City Finals. Although we just missed out, you can’t take away from the brilliant Netball, or the great attitude shown by the team; they should be really proud of themselves!
Y5/6 Leeds Girls Football City Finals at Cardinal Heenan (24/5/19) – 3rd place
24 May 2019
With the seasons almost over, the girls finished the half term competing at the Leeds City Finals. With the top 4 teams in the city there, it was always going to be difficult but the team played their best football in the first game against Highfield; applying lots of pressure and creating chances. Despite this, the game remained 0-0 all the way through extra time and went to penalties. The girls were very brave to step up on take their penalties, and even got them all on target. We were unfortunate to miss out, and Alina even made a great save to keep us in it at one stage. It was obviously difficult for the girls to take after such a great season, but they showed so many of the personal qualities which made them the great team they are to pick themselves up to win the 3rd place play off against Holy Family. It’s been an incredible season for the girls who have won games in the league, City Finals, County Finals and North of England Finals this year, and had a great time doing so!
Y5/6 Tag Rugby City Finals at JCCS (21/5/19) – 3rd place
21 May 2019
The hectic week continued on Tuesday as the Tag Rugby 1st team went to John Charles Centre for Sport to compete at the City Finals. We were drawn in a particularly tough group, but were able to win all our group games, including some where we had to come back from losing positions, to qualify for the quarter finals! We were able to win the quarters and despite losing the semi final in a close 4-3 defeat, picked ourselves up and won the 3rd place play off to finish 3rd out of around 150 teams! A brilliant achievement and they will now go onto represent the whole of Leeds at the West Yorkshire Finals in July!
Y5/6 Netball Heat at Corpus Christi (20/5/19) – Winners!
20 May 2019
The start to an extremely busy week began with the first round of the Leeds Netball competition on Monday. We took the whole Netball squad, comprising of two teams. Both teams played exceptional Netball, making it to the semi-finals, where they actually met each other! The winner of the semi also won the final and therefore qualified for the Regional Finals after half term! A great start to the week!
Y5/6 Boys Football 1st team – Leeds Cup Final vs Holy Family (9/5/19) – Lost 2-0
9 May 2019
In a big couple of days for the boys’ football team, they started with a trip to Garforth Town Stadium for the final of the Leeds Cup against Holy Family Primary School. This was our first ever appearance in this final and the team were excited to play in an actual stadium! Both teams had chances in the first half, and again in slippery, tricky conditions the ball was difficult to control. With the added occasion of being in a final the boys did well to manage their emotions and hold their nerve. They didn’t let it get them down when a Holy Family strike skidded in off the post and came out in the second have with all the energy and focus they’d shown all season. Despite conceding a second, and eventually losing the game, the boys played well. A shot just wouldn’t fall in our favour; we created chances through brilliant build up play, but it clearly just wasn’t going to be our day. Credit to Holy Family, who also played well and had some excellent attacking players. Still, the team couldn’t have given any more, and can be proud of how far they got to get to a great final!
Y5/6 Tag Rugby Regionals at Allerton High School – Winners! (26/3/19)
26 March 2019
As a busy week of sport got underway, we took 6 teams to Tag Rugby regionals this week; a record number of teams for any school! It was a brilliant day and everyone played to their best and represented the school brilliantly! We even managed to get a team through to the Leeds City Finals in May, which is a great achievement in itself, but to have so many children playing sport and enjoying themselves is another fantastic achievement!
Y5/6 Girls’ Football 1st team at the North of England Finals! (21/3/19)
21 March 2019
In what was their biggest achievement to date, the girls’ football team travelled all the way down to Sheffield to represent the school, the city, and the county at the North of England Football Finals! With 11 teams competing, each a winner of their own county competition, the standard was always going to be high. Never ones to shrink from a challenge, the girls took it head on and gave everyone they played a tough game, getting some great wins and were genuinely unlucky in other games. The team that eventually won, from Durham, won all their games, except for the one when they played us – a 1-1 draw, which should show how competitive we were. The girls are a fantastic team full of great players and fully deserved to be a part of such a special occasion!
Y4/5/6 Cross Country City Finals at Temple Newsam (6/2/19)
6 February 2019
After competing at the Cross Country Regional Competition in the Autumn, those children and teams who qualified also competed in the City Finals this week against the best runners from all across Leeds. Shadwell had the Girls’ team and Oliver from Y4; the Y5 Girls’ team; and both the Boys’ and Girls’ teams from Y6 competing – the most we had ever taken! Although we didn’t get anyone qualifying for the County Finals, everyone ran to their best and we had some excellent finishes!
Y5/6 Girls Football 1st team West Yorkshire County Finals (14/1/19) – Winners!
14 January 2019
The girls team travelled to West Riding County FA today as the sole representative of Leeds for the Girls’ Football West Yorkshire Finals. Throughout the day they played the best team from both Huddersfield and Bradford, and were able to win both by scores of 8-0 and 2-0 thanks to some great defending and clinical finishing! Winning the County Finals now means the team will go onto compete at the North of England Finals in March, representing the entire County! A truly amazing achievement for a great team! Well done girls!
Y5 Dodgeball Tournament at John Smeaton Leisure Centre – Winners (29/11/18)
29 November 2018
The Y5 Dodgeball team competed in the Regional Dodgeball tournament this week. It was the first time we had entered a team, having done some training at school the team started brightly, winning their group and qualifying for the final. The final was very close, and although everyone played their part throughout the tournament, a special mention goes to Dan who, being our last player, was able to beat the four remaining players on the opposition with win the tournament and qualify for the City Finals next year! The team’s record finished with 9 wins, 1 draw and 0 losses!
Y5/6 Girls Football 2017-18 - The best Girls' Football team in the whole of Leeds!
15 July 2018
Our Girls Football team are officially the best in the whole of Leeds! After qualifying for the City Finals as a result of a tough league season, the team went to Priesthorpe High School to contest the championship. In the semi-final we played St Paul's, managing to take the lead through Jess' goal. Even though St Paul's equalised we held firm over extra time and the game eventually went to penalties. Emily and Sukhmann were very brave and scored theirs, whilst Gopika made some brilliant saves and stopped St Paul's, and we were through to the final! In the final we played Holy Family, a team who had scored 178 goals in the league this season! We played our best football of the season, with Jess managing to score right before half time. Holy Family piled on the pressure in the second half but the team consistently put in committed tackles, with Gopika making more fantastic saves! With Megan scoring the goal of the season on the break, beating two players and powering the ball into the goal, sealed the final 2-0 result and provided a great end to a great season - What an incredible achievement!
Y5/6 Boys Football 2017-18 - League Winners for the 2nd year in a row!
15 July 2018
Our Boys' Football team had an incredible season and managed to win the league! We gave everything all season and everyone's effort counted as we won the title for the second straight season! By winning our league we qualified for a knockout tournament against the winners of other leagues. After 5 minutes of our first round game against Woodlesford we were 2-0 down. Despite being in a losing position, we kept battling away and got back into it with two quick goals in the second half, we then scored another to win it 3-2 in extra time! Although we lost in the quarterfinals, we were still one of the best 8 teams in the whole of Leeds, out of 80 schools! We were also two games away from representing the whole of Leeds at the County Finals, which is great achievement!
Y5/6 Girls Tag Rugby 2017-18 - The best Girls' Tag Rugby team in the whole of Leeds, for the 4th year in a row!
15 July 2018
Our Girls Tag Rugby team are officially the best in the whole of Leeds, for the 4th year running! We won our games in the qualifying tournament 4-0, 4-1 and 4-0. By topping our group it meant we qualified for the City Finals. We went to those finals and played against the best teams from across Leeds. The other teams were really good, but we managed to win all our games, showing great resilience and teamwork to win the title. All the hard work was worth it, and now we’ll always be able to call ourselves city champions!
Y6 Tag Rugby teams 2017-18 - The best Tag Rugby team in the whole of Leeds!
15 July 2018
We officially have the best Tag Rugby team in the whole of Leeds! We also took three Y6 teams to a Tag Rugby regional tournament, which was a great experience and it was brilliant to see so many children representing the school brilliantly! One team won all their games at Regionals and qualified for the City Finals. At the finals they won all our group games, and also the quarter final and the semi final. We managed to get all the way to the final against Lower Wortley, who had won it the previous two years. There were no tries in the final, but lots of amazing tagging. It went all the way to extra time, and next try wins. Lower Wortley even started with the ball again, so we had to stop them before we had a chance to attack ourselves. Alfie managed to break through to score the try which made us the best team in the whole of Leeds, but we wouldn’t have gotten anywhere near that point without everyone giving everything they had throughout the tournament, and especially in the final! By winning the city title we also qualified to represent the whole of Leeds at the County Finals. It was a really tough format but we only lost one game; we showed great resilience and we have won 16 out of our 17 games we played this year which is amazing! The Y6 team’s results were: Group Stage: Won 4-1 vs Churwell Won 6-0 vs Tranmere Park Won 5-4 vs Holy Family Won 3-2 vs Talbot Quarter Finals: Won 5-3 vs Woodlesford Semi-finals: Won 3-1 vs Holy Trinity Final: Won 1-0 vs Lower Wortley
Y5/6 Hockey teams 2017-18 - Wetherby Tournament Winners!
14 July 2018
This year we travelled to Wetherby High School for a Hockey tournament. Both teams did really well to qualify from their groups and reach the semi-finals. Unfortunately, one team lost their semi, but our other team made it to the final, winning 1-0 to win the whole tournament! Well done to both our teams who played excellent Hockey and demonstrated great teamwork skills!
Y5/6 Cross Country teams 2017-18
14 July 2018
We took a team of boys and a team of girls from each Y5 & 6 classes from both our schools. Everyone ran brilliantly, especially as it was a lot of children's first time running competitively. We even managed to get our Y5 boys team to the city finals, with Zak also qualifying to represent the whole of Leeds at the County Finals! A special mention also to Ollie in Y6 for qualifying as an individual runner to the City Finals!

14 July 2018
Our Netball squad had a great season this year; we managed to finish 3rd in the league out of all the teams in the East of Leeds! We also took two teams to the regional tournament where both teams played very well, with one team even making it all the way to the final! Unfortunately we lost the final 1-0, just missing out on qualifying for the next round. The children should be very proud of their efforts regardless!
Y5 Tag Rugby teams 2017-18 - City Finalists!
14 July 2018
We took three Y5 teams to the Tag Rugby tournament. All our teams played brilliantly and one team even managed to win the regional tournament and qualify for the City Finals! Not only that, we won almost all our games against other teams which were made up of Y6 players. We went to the Tag Rugby City finals and we played really well. We got off to a tough start and actually lost our first match; the team we lost to were the two time reigning champions and we only just lost 4-3. We managed to win some games as well to finish in 13th place, out of 150 teams across the City! It was a great experience, especially to also support the Y6 team, and we can’t wait to try again next year.
Y6 Cycling team
16 November 2017
Our excellent Y6 cyclists took part in the Tour De Yorkshire, where they cycled between Shadwell and Wigton Moor Primary Schools. The baton was well received from Thorner Primary, by our whole school, and all of our children demonstrated their cycling skills and their brilliant road safety awareness during the event. Well done to everyone involved!
