Girls’ Football City Finals at Priesthorpe High School

26 May 2017

After qualifying as one of the top four teams in Leeds, Shadwell girls’ football team travelled to West Leeds to participate in the girls’ football finals day. A fantastic achievement in itself!

Our semi-final game was against Allerton, a very strong team. The game started evenly however, with both sides using possession to their advantage and carving out opportunities. Despite Allerton having the bigger, stronger team, we were able to stick with them; doing out best to keep to our markers and pressuring the ball. It was unfortunate for Shadwell that Allerton made the break though with the last kick of the first half.

The timing couldn’t have been worse, but the girls have come through their fair share of setbacks over the past two seasons and were determined to not let this get them down. The second half continued much the same as the first, but with Shadwell now having to apply more pressure it left increasing amounts of space at the back; some great sweeping from Harlie and Emma stopped some Allerton breakaways, but they got their second goal towards the end to make the final score 2-0 to Allerton. The girls were unlucky to concede the goals at the times they did.

The third place play off was against Alwoodley, who had lost their semi-final to eventual winners Meanwood. The girls played even better in this game than they had done in the semi-final, passing the ball well and showing some brilliant individual pieces of skill. Highlights included Harlie’s long range volley going narrowly wide and Emily beating three players and later hitting the post. We were unlucky to concede two goals on the break, again in each half, but the girls should be so proud of how far they’ve come and what a great season they’ve had!
