Y5/6 Boys Football at home vs Rothwell St Mary’s Primary School – Lost 1-0

4 May 2017

After having their league championship victory confirmed, the boys team went into their cup semi-final against Rothwell St Mary’s full of energy and nothing to lose; having already exceeded their own expectations. It was, however, the opposition who started on the front foot, putting our defence under early pressure with some jinking runs from their strikers. It took a couple of great saves from Alex and some fantastic last ditch challenges from Jacob and Sam to keep it level.

Rothwell took the lead soon after though when their winger twisted inside and out, putting a low finish past Alex to make it 1-0, which is what the score remained at halftime.

If the first half had seen Rothwell on top, the second half was more Shadwell’s. At halftime the thoughts were that as long as it remained 1-0 we were still in with a chance, and so it proved. With 10 minutes to go we decided to make a move, pushing players further forward in search of an equaliser. This in turn, limited Rothwell’s chances of adding a second, limiting them to long range shots.

Unfortunately, the Shadwell pressure didn’t lead to a goal, but we did have a few near misses and an exciting end to a very close game! We wish Rothwell St Mary’s lots of luck in the final and, although the boys were naturally disappointed at missing out, they can be proud of having gotten so far.
