Girls Football match at home vs Immaculate Heart – Won 1-0

23 February 2017

The girls football team begin their first game this half term as they hosted Immaculate Heart of Mary Primary School. At one point during the day there were questions as to weather the game would go ahead due to the weather, but a calmer afternoon meant no reason to cancel and the game went ahead.

The first half saw Shadwell go against a blustery wind, but the girls were able to manage the conditions well and even took the lead when Emily’s shot was cleared off the line, the clearance only went to Joanna, whose left football strike found its way past the goalkeeper from the edge of the area.

Immaculate Heart had their chances but a great save from Gracie saw their best shot tipped round the post for a corner. The halftime score remained 1-0.

Shadwell were able to apply more pressure in the second half but still had to be aware of counter attacks from the opposition; Pippa and Connie made at least two great tackles each as they swept up at the back. The aspect which was most impressive from the team was their battling and helping each other out when winning the ball back – the girls are clearly realising that they are no longer year 5s and can now match oppositions physically, challenging for everything and constantly applying pressure. We now have 13 points in the league, compared to 14 at the end of last season, but have played 5 fewer games so far!

This was probably the team’s best performance of the season and great to build on as we enter the busy final stages of the season.
