Boys’ Football match vs Highfield away – Drew 1-1
31 January 2017
For the boys’ final league game of the half term they travelled to Highfield in the hope of extending their lead at the top of the league table. On a small, crowded pitch it was difficult to play football and it showed as the majority of the first half was a scrappy affair played through the middle. There were a couple of chances, but nothing clear cut. That was until half time drew near and a Highfield shot found its way into the top right corner of the Shadwell goal.
To be fair, Highfield were the better team in the first half and were deserved of their lead going into the break. Shadwell had had a couple of shots, but not as many as they would have hoped for. Despite this, the boys went into the second half confident of turning things around. That was clear from kick off as Ollie, and then Joe, had chances which went narrowly wide.
If the first half saw Highfield on top, then the second half was definitely Shadwell’s; the boys put some great pressure on the opposition goal and had started playing more direct – the style of play which was needed in the longer grass. It was unlucky for the team that the chances just weren’t hitting the back of the net. It also took a brave save from Alex when a Highfield striker broke through, requiring the Shadwell stopper to dive low at his feet. If that chance had gone in it would no doubt have been game over!
With the end of the game approaching, some great work from Alfie down the left saw him beat a couple of players, before playing in a great cross for Alex to strike home with his weaker left foot to equalise! There was still enough time for a couple more chances, notably when Ollie saw an excellent shot rebound off the post.
The game ended 1-1, but after snatching a draw from the jaws of defeat, the boys can be pleased with the point they earned.
