Boys’ Football match vs West End away – Won 3-1

24 January 2017

In the last 16 of the Leeds & Holbeck Cup, the team travelled to West End Primary School. Shadwell had a good spell at the start of the game and were able to take the lead when Adian tapped in from a corner – his first for school! From then on it was all West End pressure; Alex had to make a couple of good saves – one from a long range strike and another when a shot rebounded off the post back out to their striker, which he then smothered. There were players putting bodies on the line to keep the ball out and some very committed tackles. Despite the pressure, West End couldn’t find the breakthrough and in Oliver D, Shadwell always have a player who will provide a great outlet. A ball over the top saw Ollie beat the defenders on the break and finish over the keeper. It was against the run of play, but Shadwell had managed to take both their chances. The score at half time remained 2-0.

The second half saw even more West End pressure, but the defending matched the attacking and everyone worked their socks off. Even when West End made the breakthrough, the boys didn’t panic, sticking to the cause. With the game drawing to an end, it was Ollie who extended the lead when he finished off a great counter attack. The game finished 3-1, and credit to the players who put in multiple defensive blocks and tackles to maintain the lead. It’s sure to be another exciting game when Shadwell play their quarter final!
