Australia Day

Class 2 have been learning about Australia this half term and they have had lots of fun celebrating Australia Day today. They learnt about why the day is celebrated, the history behind it and used their maths skills to calculate how long ago the very first Australia Day was celebrated. Then, they all opened their special mysterious packages that had arrived over the weekend...there were so many activities inside the children did not waste any time in getting busy!

First, we used our new playdough pots to help us in maths. We made and measured some snakes and then completed some tricky maths problems using our measuring and addition skills. Then, it was onto our history lesson where we heard all about Captain Arthur Phillip's journey from England to Australia to set up a colony. We talked about the views of the indigenous people of Australia on this arrival and how they now celebrate the diverse culture of Australia on this day, we enjoyed listening to a special performance of the National Anthem which showcased the wonderful diversity of the country.

Our final job before lunch was to draw a great white shark following a tutorial video, these were spectacular! The children were then challenged to follow some more tutorials for different animals and we are so amazed with their wonderful artistic skills.

During the afternoon, the children completed their creative challenges of making a rain stick and a model of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and they have shown amazing DT skills in completing these challenges. We finished the day with a meeting to show off all our wonderful creations and we were even treated to a song by Kylie! Well done to all of Class 2 (and their parents for their support!), you have made your teachers very proud and we hope you enjoy looking at the photos of your special day.
