Chinese New Year in Class 5

We had so much fun celebrating chinese new year in Class 5! In RE, we learnt all about the Chinese zodiac; we ordered and retold the story in our own way. This helped us to identify what zodiac sign the children were (Year of the pig or rat).

Once we knew this, it was time to get creative! We spent a whole afternoon immersing ourselves in Chinese New Year activities, focusing mainly on music and art. Firstly, we listened to Guzheng music and tried to identify the instruments used - it was harder than you'd think! We listened to some English songs in the same style and it was great fun trying to guess what these were. Here's some examples:

After that, we created our masterpieces. Children were given black paint, yellow and red card and given free choice of what they'd like to create in their sketchbooks. Most children opted to include their zodiac sign along with the year they were born, their name and the current zodiac sign all in Chinese! Children used a range of painbrushes and tools to explore different techniques too.

Here's some examples of our work:

We finished our Chinese New Year celebrations by tasting some different foods. There were mixed reviews but we all enjoyed the experience of trying something new!
